I am sure my parents were concerned about what I wanted to make out of my life. I did not care much. I joined college because one has to join college. Period. With the benefit of hindsight, I can say that my thinking process got shaped during my college days. This is the time – India or abroad – when young students enter into college. When preparing for a lecture on Business Development - Innovative Strategies to young students in Thailand; I had to research the Millennials Generation and their impact. Two things stood out: (1) era of instant gratification, and (2) the concept of telling & selling to build relationships. I come from a traditional (or old way, as they say, it) school. Most of my selling days – including now - were about building & nurturing relationships, typically, over a medium- to long- periods of time. Some of these would yield results (read sales) and few would not. Generally, irrespective of the outcome, unless the contact wanted not to; the relationship remained (warm or hot). A lesson in relationships. I spend more time in - customers, prospects, partners, influencers, employees – the market ecosystem. I was in the ASEAN region. And, this post is about an experience from a meeting with one of our long-standing customers. That day I learned a lesson in relationships. The project with this customer was not going well. And, had recovered from the brink of collapse. But it had a long distance to travel to be a success. And, this was my first visit to the customer.
